Jennifer Kim 0wnz j00
Have you hugged your Class Secretary today?
Mad crazy humongous etc etc props going out to Jennifer Kim, who saw fit to cram notes covering, *ahem*...Three Biochem Chapters, a Two-Chapter Conference, and a partridge in Dental Anatomy (thank you very much) into my inbox for your studying pleasure. You'll note (Ha! A pun!) that there's now a Dental Anatomy section in the Note Vault to accomodate files for said class, including a list of defintions Jennifer compiled during last Tuesday's lecture.
In case you were keeping score at home, this makes three Note Vault sections completely dominated by Secretary Kim.

Daily SoBig Rant
Yes, you did get a lot of SoBig e-mails today. When I said "until after midnight" yesterday, I didn't dream that would mean "until 9AM this morning." D9RPQ811 was left on all night pumping out SoBig-infected e-mails.
The good news: SoBig is internally programmed to stop harvesting e-mails and mass-mailing itself on Sept 10th.
The bad news: This is supposedly so the author doesn't confuse any havoc created by a new, improved (depending on how you look at it) variant with lingering effects of the old variant. Brace yourself, folks - this could be fun.
The worse news: The old virus just stops harvesting e-mails and mass-mailing itself on the 10th. However, it continues to search for updates to its viral code. If it finds an update, unless "D9RPQ811" is identified and cleaned, then we're all already guaranteed a place on the list for receiving some copies of "SoBigger".

Things and Stuff, Etc
The mysterious "D9RPQ811" (the computer name of whoever is sending out the SoBig e-mails) signed on to their RoadRunner Internet again some time before 10:36PM this evening, sending out SoBig viral e-mails until after midnight. It's so frustrating to sit here watching the e-mails come in...and even be able to ping their machine (located at cs666992-229.satx.rr.com [66.69.92.229], at least for tonight), and yet be completely unable to determine who they are or deliver a message to them. Heck, they're three hops from me if you count the hop from my computer to my router. Most, if not all, of the e-mails clogging up our UTHSCSA accounts appear to be originating from this particular user, who I'm sure would be mortified to learn the havoc they're unleashing on their colleagues and/or classmates.

On a less frustrating note, added a "Useful Items for the First Test" document from Saba to the Histology section of the Note Vault.

Radiology Quiz 2 Review Added
Added a review document from Erin "Entertainer" Loggins containing info for the second Radiology Quiz tomorrow. Says Erin, "I hope this helps for the quiz tomorrow. I just basically tried to condense the info (which ends up as 5 pages) and cover all of the quiz objectives! Good luck!" Thanks, Erin!

Misc Reminders (Again)
The Tech Resources and Tutorials page is still available if you're looking for instructions on how to update various computer programs and components. If you need to visit this page at a later time, it's on the Links page.
I do hope you've all run the SoBig Removal Tool, just to check. Better safe than sorry.

Notes Added - SoBig Virus Warning

Notes Added
Saba hooked us up with the rest of her notes for Histo Lab, Steve Tseng sent out a list of things Dr. Herbert said to keep an eye on for the first Histo test, Courtney Ho sent in the answers to today's practice practical, and Kean Bliss dropped a really well-organized hitlist for the Trunk Final in Gross Anatomy. (How 'bout that practice practical, eh? My assessment: difficult, but undeniably minty. Did everyone get that, or was someone in front of me chewing gum?)
Anyway, all those new notes can all be found in the Note Vault.

SoBig Virus Infection
Someone who has visited this site has a SoBig virus infection, because webmaster@uthscsadental.com has received a number of these viral e-mails.
The likely culprit was also signed on to their RoadRunner Internet account between 8:49 and 9:20 this morning (Tuesday 8/26), was later signed on at home on their RoadRunner around 7:30 PM, and has probably visited the UTEP and University of Kansas webpages (grad_admissions@eecs.ku.edu?) recently as well.
Just to be safe, everyone needs to run the following SoBig Removal Tool from Symantec: FixSbigF.exe.
Let me know if it finds anything.

More Notes - Tech Resources - Directory Updates
Added a hitlist for the Gross Anatomy Practice Practical from Adam Verrett. (Thanks, Adam!)
Once again, if you've taken what you consider to be really good notes over anything...please send them in!

New Website Section
If you head onto the Links page, you'll see a new link to Tech Resources and Tutorials. This page contains a number of step-by-step tutorials for performing some of the tasks that we've been requesting of you with regards to updates, etc.
We know that, sometimes, you really do want to "update the whatever thingy they were talking about", but have no idea how that's supposed to be accomplished. Well, Click Here and your questions will be answered.
If you can think of anything else tech-related that you'd like specific step-by-step instructions for, feel free to suggest those to webmaster@uthscsadental.com.

Directory Updated
Almost everyone's birthday has been added to the Directory. A few folks didn't sign up on Tony's Birthday sheet, so they're currently classified "not born yet". Please don't speak to these individuals until they are born or they verify that they did in fact already have a birthday.
I also added two versions of the Directory - sorted by Cube # and Birthday. Click the column headers to sort the list by those criteria.
Please check to make sure your information is correct and complete. If you've got a non-UTHSCSA e-mail account or AOL\MSN Messenger name you'd like your classmates to have, let me know at webmaster@uthscsadental.com.

Notes Added and Files Renamed
Added some Biochem and Radiology notes from Jennifer Kim.
Secretary Kim included a helpful reminder in the last set of notes, related here:
Here’s the biochem stuff. I hope the information is correct, sometimes I don’t catch things, so if u can just remind people (I think for all the notes that everyone types) that it’s still important to take their own notes, and use these to help in addition to what they have.
I've also renamed all of the note files with a Class Name prefix, so it's not as easy to get all the files mixed up when you download them without renaming them.
I'm working on a set of pages with helpful instruction sets for the computer stuff - setting up Outlook to remove messages from the server as soon as they're downloaded, updating Windows, VitalSource KEY, and VirusScan, and anything else I can think of. Keep an eye out here for those sometime soon.
In case you were completely overwhelmed by Friday's embryology lecture (and if you weren't, what the heck is wrong with you?), there are some helpful animations and resources on the Martindale's Health Science Guide, linked on the Links Page. Once there, click "Anatomy and Histology", then "Embryology", and look for headings that mention movies and animation.
As an operational note, Craig Blaisdell was the first person to e-mail webmaster@uthscsadental.com. (Jennifer missed this honor by a mere 23 hours.) As reward for his expediant communication above and beyond the call of duty, he was told to "shut up and let me get back to work, because I'm very busy."
That is all. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled studying.

Directory Added
Added the Student Directory. It should be password protected, so only members of the class should be able to access it (once I give everyone the username and password, of course), but there are still some issues I'm getting straightened out with the whole login thing.
Also made some changes to the Officers and Liaisons pages by linking all the names to their respective e-mail accounts and listing cubicle numbers, in case you need to know that and the website is somehow the most convenient way of locating that information.
Is your Windows Internet Connection Firewall on? It should be.
Is your McAfee on and patched? It should be.
Is your webmail cleaned out? It should be.
This concludes today's Information Security harping session.

Notes Updated
Added some histo notes from Saba, and also added a link in the Resources section of the Links page to Martindale's Health Science Guide, previously indicated to be a pretty good resource for animations and videos relevant to Embryology.

Notes Updated
The long and short of it is that a number of notes and other class documents (Biomaterials possible test questions, for instance) have been added to the Note Vault.

Tech Notes
Three small issues:
Make sure that you're regularly cleaning out your webmail. The way we set up Outlook leaves messages on the server until they're deleted from the Outlook Trash Folder or until you delete them from the server manually via the webmail interface. The Webmail quotas are not very large, so two or three of the larger e-mails going around recently would be enough to fill up your account. Once full, any e-mails sent to your uthscsa.edu account will be returned to their sender without any notification to you. As a general rule - once a large (2MB or more) e-mail is downloaded to your Outlook, you should then go and immediately remove it from the webserver, or save the attachment and send the e-mail to the Trash folder and then empty it. It is possible to set up your Outlook to simply remove e-mails from the Webserver as soon as they've been downloaded to your laptop. Ask one of the techs or Computer Reps about this if you're interested.
Make sure you're keeping up with the VitalBook updates. There is a new update available that corrects the "remove a highlight and crash" error, as well as a few other issues. While in VitalBook, go to "Help", and "Software Downloads". Open (or Save and Run) the update file for your computer type to update VitalBook. I'll ask Dr. Guest if this upgrade will allow you to renew your VitalBook license without getting stuck in an infinite license renewal loop, so we can stop getting the license expiration warning every time the application is started.
Dell users - make sure you've patched your laptops against the Blaster vulnerability. E-mails have been sent out to the distribution list with instructions. Furthermore, Richard Test has sent out some very useful information via e-mail regarding the usage of the Windows Firewall. As suggested in his e-mails, having your Firewall turned on basically renders you immune from "port sniffer" worms and viruses such as the Blaster variants. It's just a plain old good idea to have it turned on, unless you know of a specific reason to have it turned off.

UTHSCSADental.com Goes Live
Welcome to the first incarnation of UTHSCSADental.com, the unofficial homepage of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School Class of 2007. The intent of this site is to serve as a resource for the DS Class of 2007, hopefully throughout the entire four year curriculum (and beyond?). As you can see above, the current list of links is as follows:
  • Home - This will bring you back to this page.
  • Notes - The primary reason for the creation of this site is to serve as a central repository of class notes and other materials (quizzes, tests, etc) submitted by students for the benefit and enlightenment of the rest of the class.
  • Directory - Contact info (e-mail, phone, instant messenger screen name, etc) for everyone in the class (as well as some other "useful" names). This resource will be password-protected so that access is only permitted to members of the DS Class of 2007.
  • Officers - A listing of the current Class Officers.
  • Liaisons - A listing of the Class Liaisons for this semester's courses.
  • Links - A list of relevent, helpful, or useful links.
This site is obviously going to be in a perpetual state of renovation and construction, and I welcome any suggestions or comments you may have regarding the site design, layout, content, etc.
I encourage those of you who take "really good notes" to submit a copy of those to webmaster@uthscsadental.com, so that we can all benefit. I'll try to keep the website updated as regularly as I can.
I'm currently working on getting an opt-in mailing list set up so those who wish to keep updated about what's available on the site can easily do so (and those who are't interested don't have to worry about me clogging up their inboxes).
Any of the aforementioned notes, suggestions, comments, offers of assistance, etc can be directed to webmaster@uthscsadental.com.
Also, once the website is up and running, if you find it to be a useful resource, please consider making a small donation to support the domain registration, bandwidth and storage costs associated with the site. Every little bit helps.
It is my sincere hope that this website becomes an integral and beneficial part of your academic routine at UTHSCSA Dental, and I look forward to seeing it develop, with everyone's help.
