Outlook Schedule, VitalBooks
Everybody give it up for DS Class of 2008 Computer Rep Michael Hoeppner who wrote a Java program to convert the web schedule into a comma-separated values file that can be imported into the Outlook Calendar. Here's how that works:
  • Save fall2004_ds2_schedule.csv to your hard drive (Desktop, My Documents - just somewhere you can find it)
  • Open Outlook and go to File - Import and Export
  • Select Import from another program or file and click Next
  • Select Comma Separated Values (Windows) and click Next
  • Click Browse and locate the fall2004_ds2_schedule.csv file you saved earlier. Select it and click OK, then click Next
  • Select Calendar as the destination and click Next
  • The fields should already be mapped and the file should have a checkmark by it in the list. Click Finish to begin the import process
  • Your calendar should now show our class schedule as it appears on the Student Services Website
  • Throw a party. w00t!

VitalBook Update
You should have received an e-mail regarding a software update for PC users of VitalSource Key 3.5. If not, open VitalBooks and go to Help - Check for Software Updates. This will take you to the download page. Download the 3.5.2 update file, open it, and run (double-click) the executable file contained within to install the update.
Preliminary testing indicates that this update fixes the errors some users were receiving when attempting to open certain books.
Also, if you haven't done so already, go to Help - Update License and create a new account using the Redemption Code located on a sticker inside the packaging for this year's DVD. This will allow you to download updated manuals and license updates.

Back on Track
Lots of updates here at UTHSCSADental.com. As you can see, I'm getting the site set up to be shared between our class, the class of 2006, and possibly the class of 2008. The new URL you may want to bookmark is http://www.uthscsadental.com/2007/, as that will bring you directly to our section of the website.
The plan is to share the Note Vault as a central repository for notes from all four years (though I hear the need for notes kinda trails off by the third year), while each class will have their own page for news, officers, liaisons, directory, and links. Only time will tell, I suppose.
In terms of our little chunk of teh intarweb, I've updated the Officers, Liaisons, and Links pages with the latest information for this semester, as well as chunked all of those documents e-mailed out so far this semester into the Note Vault.

And that's where you come in - I've updated everyone's spifferific new cube numbers in the Student Directory, but if you've changed phone numbers or screen names over the summer, let me know so I can get that updated. I'll be sending out another e-mail with the username and password so you can check your info to make sure it's current.

Computer Issues
Windows XP Service Pack 2 should be available on Windows Update relatively soon, and if you've got automatic downloads turned on, you'll probably have it before you know it. It contains a number of fairly significant changes, including a "Security Center" that will tell you if you're taking the necessary steps to protect your computer against vile nastiness. It may give you grief about Symantec, but they're already working on a fix for that so don't get yer britches in a bunch, pardner.

If you're running Ad-Aware (and you durn well should be, by golly), there's a whole new version available for download from Lavasoft. I'm sure it's better somehow.

I sent off the list of students afflicted by Crap Bag Syndrome to the computer group. Now, we wait.

Yes, your VitalBooks is broken. (shock and alarm) I'm aware of a manual that just isn't there, and a textbook that explodes when you try to open it. I've been told they're aware of the issues and are working on a fix. Now, we wait.

E-mails have been fired at Guest regarding the importable schedules. Now, we wait.

An e-mail has also been disseminated through the ether (aimed squarely at the appropriate course directors) regarding our removal from last year's course listings on Blackboard. Maybe that'll get taken care of by the time they migrate to Blackboard v6 next semester. Once again - waiting.

Ofelia hooked us up with a groovy National Board Review CD. I'll be passing that around in class. It's also got that CD from 3rd-year Samira that Saba passed around in case you missed it the first time. Just wait until it comes by your seat and get your copy on.

We have a new password to remember - the VitalBook login password. (You should set that when you register VitalBooks.) I'll endeavor to get the instructions for changing that added to the UTHSCSA-Related Password section of the Tech Tutorials page. Who knows, maybe I'll finally get those VPN instructions put up? Guess you'll have to wait.

Finally
Seth Murphy asked me to post this picture of Ryan Mooney, but I said "No" and that's final.
OMG! BUMFUZZLED!
