Differential Tuition Proposal

Proposal

UTHSCSA Dental School
"Differential Tuition"

The UTHSCSA Dental School proposes to institute a “Differential Tuition” for all DDS-degree students on the following “phased-in” schedule:

Fiscal Year 2005 - $1000
Fiscal Year 2006 - $2000
Fiscal Year 2007 - $3000

The Dental School recognizes that 20% of the revenue from “Differential Tuition” is set aside to fund academic scholarships for financially-disadvantaged students. We propose that the dollars remaining after such set aside be returned to the Dental School to fund a retention program for high-performing Dental School faculty and staff members.

Rationale for Implementing “Differential Tuition”:
The total educational costs for DDS-degree students are significantly lower than the national mean, and less than the other two Texas Dental Schools.
Data from the Fiscal Year 2002* (most current available data) shows the following relationship of Total Educational Cost of DDS (or DMD) degree for in-state residents at the 54 U.S. Dental Schools;

Rank School Total Cost
54 Southern Pub. School $32570
53 UTHSCSA $42121
48 Another Texas School $48104
44 Another Texas School $53999
41 25th percentile School $56588
27 Median School $70534
17 Highest Public School $95613
13 75th percentile School $117759
1 Eastern Priv. School $185388
MEAN $88534
